The idea behind IAS

„The network is the computer“says a SUN advertising slogan. As to fulfil this slogan, during the last 15 years the internet has become a ubiquitous media. Within big parts of economy, research and even private life it has become a fixture. The global computer network offers an infrastructure for a broad range of services that depend on each other and enable a world wide communication, blurring the borders between countries and continents.

At the moment IAS is being developed as a research and development project of if(is) in cooperation with  the Federal Office for Information Security. By the help of IAS profiles for the internet (IP networks) and especially for the upper communication and application layers shall be created. By the help of probes that are placed at selected points in the internet the data traffic shall be analyzed. The IAS results shall be used to gain new information about the use of technology trends, to monitor states and to analyze problems.  The use of an evaluation and visualization system makes it possible to display results accurate and clear.

Furthermore appearance and plausibility of attacks can be analyzed and displayed. Based on this results short term, mid term and long term actions can be derived, that are useful for a future trustable application of the internet.

Basic aims

The IAS tasks can be divided into four sub areas: profiling, declaration of actual state, alert system and forecast.

Main task of the profile creation is the comprehensive analysis and interpretation of communication parameters, these parameters “shape” profiles and patterns, which in turn are representative for different states of the Internet. Within the next step anomalies are searched for and the causes for the changes in states are analysed and interpreted. It is important to find out whether the state anomalies have a natural cause, or if they are based on an intended attack. If there is an intended attack it is important to find the patterns that identify the attack.

Through detailed information about the actual state and the help of historical data a warning can be spoken out, if there’s a significant change in traffic. Based on these information arrangements, for the protection and maintenance of the operability of the internet can be started.

Another important function is a visual presentation of the internet state, like a weather or traffic jam map. Primary objective is to find a display mode which shows the most important details at first sight. Investigation and analysis of the collected profiles and patterns enable us to make predictions about state changes of the internet. Intended attacks can be recognized and forecasted in future.

Partnership

The institute for internet security has successfully completed the second development phase. The system has already approved in operation. We are looking forward for partners that are willing to join the partnership and to operate further probe and evaluation systems.Organizations that operate just one probe will have the possibility to get an insightful report about their own network traffic from the central evaluation system. The presentation available below, will give further information about the system and the possibility of the partnership:
