Our society is changing as we are more and more becoming a linked information society. The reliability and trustworthiness of communication techniques and of course information has reached a high level of importance.
Because of the seemingly unlimited possibilities and advantages when compared to other media, the Internet has become one of the most important infrastructures of our modern society.
This important field of application is where we, the Institute for Internet Security, see our core competencies. Our activities concentrate on the pragmatical realization of secure and confidential IT-concepts. Through continuous treatment of current and future focal points a center of competence for Internet-security is to be formed in Germany.

About us
The Institute for Internet Security - if(is) is an innovative, independent, scientific facility of the Westfälische Hochschule ("Westphalian University of Applied Sciences"). Besides research and development, we are a creative service provider with a focus on Internet security. One of our overall tasks is to push forward research and development in terms of Internet security and to improve the statutory framework of Internet security.
Since the official opening in May 2005, the young and creative research team turned the institute into one of the most considerable competencies for Internet security. Our aim is to make the Internet a more trustworthy and secure place.

Services
Besides our research and teaching activities we offer various services.
Using the existing infrastructure of our university and having the potential of interdisciplinary cooperation with other faculties we are able to offer complex services within cost-effective bounds. Furthermore the purposeful placing of bachelor theses may replace expensive and risky basic research.
A high level of education and further education ensures that all employees working for the Institute have a broad state of knowledge when they continue their work on the IT market. A fact you will benefit from in terms of cost-effectiveness.
The following services are just a few examples of what our institute has to offer, but our services are in no way limited to the activities mentioned below.
These are our main services:
- Consulting: We advise you to improve your Internet security or that of your customers.
- Live hacking / Awareness performance workshops: Because knowledge is the best way to protect oneself, our experts equip you with the knowledge which security-risks have to be faced when using the internet. This is achieved on site through entertaining hands-on workshops. Our specialists point out how security-vulnerabilities can be exploited by attackers. The aim is to improve the security awareness of all participants and to impart necessary knowledge for a responsible use of new technologies.
- Research and development: We use our know how and infrastructure to perform your research and development straight forward and efficient.
- Studies: We perform studies on special issues or on the operability of ideas to give you a good foundation for strategic decisions.
- Concepts and specifications: We develop concepts and specifications enabling you to use the rare resource of time for other tasks.
- Prototype development: We work on prototypes for the verification of functions and concepts ("proof of concept") or as a foundation for your future products.
- Benchmarking: We create benchmarking reports for products or concepts, which can be used as a foundation for your decisions.
- Surveys: We perform surveys in your order. The results can be used as a basis for decision making.
- Penetration tests: Together we conduct systematic and adapted penetration tests to monitor the state of your Internet security, find security leaks and to propose improvements.
